SPOKANE, Wash. — As Washington's East region goes into Phase 2 on Sunday, Gonzaga is exploring the possibility of allowing players' immediate families back into the stands at McCarthey Athletic Center, per a school spokesperson.

Gonzaga will be allowed to have 200 people at home basketball games with Spokane entering Phase 2 of the state’s reopening plan on Sunday. School officials are optimistic they can accommodate players’ families, but that might be about all, according to deputy director of athletics Chris Standiford.

It’s 200 people total in the building so we’re dealing with a very small number,” Standiford said. “We’re north of 100 already when you add up the teams, game officials, TV broadcast crews, media, staff, custodians.

We’re focusing on the players families right now to create access for them.”

      • Washington St. does what they do, really uglied up the game, had a chance against Arizona in Tucson, but totally faded in the 4th quarter. Lost 60-51.

The hapless Huskies won a game! Beat Arizona St. in Tempe, usually a tough place to play. But they caught ASU on a night they couldn't hit water falling out of a boat--20% overall and 3-22 behind the arc.

The Zags' friends Missouri St. stayed undefeated in conference. Pretty much a 2 team race with them and Drake, seems to be the story almost every year in the Missouri Valley.

Pepperdine gets their first conference win today, 51-49 over LMU. Broke a tie in the closing seconds.

Pacific leading USD 58-51 w/ about 5 minutes left.

Who wants to be 3rd in the WCC? USD still in the driver's seat but leaving the door open a bit. SCU, USD, Portland and USF all have 7 or 8 wins, but number of losses are all over the place because various teams have played more or less games than other teams.

                • Missouri St. has a knack for pulling out these close games. Down 1, inbounded at half court w/ 4 1/2 seconds left. Drove into the lane, drew a foul, then falling backwards prayer fling toward the bucket went in. Missed the FT but no time for Illinois St. to do anything. Missouri St. wins 73-72. Outscored ISU 7-2 in the last 30 seconds I believe.

Missouri State came back from 16 points down.

MSU took the lead by one, Illinois State setup at the top of the key and simply drove by the defender for a lay-up. MSU calls timeout and gets the ball just past half court. the ISU defender overplays the inbounds pass, letting the MSU dribbler drive across the court to the right side of the key. Nobody picks up the ball handler until the ISU big steps out right at the horseshoe. Falling backwards toss goes in and she gets the foul.

Neither team played any defense on the last couple of plays. MSU hit a couple of late threes to get back in it. ISU missed a couple of free throws which could have ensured the best MSU could have done is a tie. Give MSU credit, they took advantage of what ISU gave them. That is why MSU is undefeated in the MVC and ISU has 5 losses in the MVC.

                      • No games feature two Top-25 teams today.

Most Top-25 teams took care of business relatively easily winning by double digits. Missouri State needed some late game heroics to steal a victory from the jaws of defeat against Illinois State who was 6-5 in conference coming into the game 73-72.

There was one upset this afternoon, when 8-9, (5-7) Oklahoma outscored #19 West Virginia 15-5 in the 4th quarter and then held on for a 72-71 victory in Morgantown.

One more Top-25 game tonight as #5 Stanford just started off against Oregon State in Corvallis.

                          • As conferences debate tournament settings, it's all but guaranteed the WCC Tourney will look different in 2021
                            By Sean Walker, KSL.com | Posted - Feb. 12, 2021 at 11:26 a.m.

PROVO — When Mark Few speaks, the West Coast Conference listens.

So when the legendary Gonzaga coach of the past 21 years started speaking up about the possibility of modifying — or even canceling altogether — the league's annual postseason men's basketball tournament, you can be sure the WCC listened.

Because it's not a matter of if something could go wrong by the conference's 10 teams getting together in Las Vegas, but what will the league do when it does?

So Few began banging the drum several weeks ago, even openly and with the media, about the annual tournament. Maybe, he hypothesized, the best thing they could do in a year when the COVID-19 pandemic that canceled the NCAA Tournament a year ago is not get together as a conference, to reduce the spread of any potential virus issues.

Bringing each team's roster, plus coaches and traveling personnel, administrators, fans, media and others to one location isn't the best idea as the pandemic continues to surge across the country, and with full vaccination efforts not available until mid-summer in most states.

"I think there's probably a way to do it, and it probably isn't gathering 10 teams together in Vegas," Few said on ESPN's SportsCenter. "Whether it's taking the top three up to Spokane and playing off up there, or something along those lines. Everybody's putting some good thought into it, and I think we'll come to a good conclusion when it's time."

Stanford started to pull away in Q3, Beavs didn't even bother to show up for Q4. Got outscored 23-6 in the final frame and lost 83-58.

                              • #7 Baylor and Texas are playing on ESPN and are putting on quite the show on how not to play basketball.

#7 Baylor is dominating the Longhorns 41-23 after 3 quarters. Yup, mighty Texas has scored all of 23 points in 3 quarters and the #7 team in the nation has an outstanding 41 points after 3. Baylor has 3 field goals and 10 turnovers in the 2nd half so far. Yes sir, a fine demonstration of women's basketball.

The projected #1 in the WNBA draft, Charlie Collier of Texas, is 1-3 for 2 points and 4 rebounds, 1 block and 3 turnovers through 3 quarters.
