  • Canada Senior Men in Athens August 17-19

I've been waiting for confirmation that Rob and Kelly will both be accompanying the team to Athens. However, assuming at least Rob will be traveling with the team, following are some tidbits I've found:

    From CIS Hoops.ca:
Tuesday, August 17-19, 2010 Acropolis International Basketball Tournament (also known as the Acropolis of Athens Tournament and the Acropolis Cup) (in Greek: Τουρνουά Ακρόπολις)

    - has been held annually since the year 1986 and takes place in Athens, Greece each summer. The tournament is named after the world famous Acropolis of Athens. The competition is played under FIBA rules. The tournament is organized by the Greek Basketball Federation and it is sponsored by Eurobank. It is considered to be the most prestigious non-FIBA organized international basketball competition that is competed between national teams.

    - 2010 tournament opponents for Canada, all of which will participate at the FIBA Worlds in Turkey in September, are:

Serbia (FIBA #5), coming off 4 victories last weekend in Turkey vs. New Zealand twice, Iran and the host Turks, is led by long-time NBA regular Nenan Krstic. This weekend, Serbia will be in Maribor, Slovenia to face Russia, New Zealand and hosts Slovenia, as they prepare to begin Group A action at the World championships.

Slovenia (FIBA #20) features 7'0" Primoz Brezec (Milwaukee Bucks), 6'3" Goran Dragic (Phoenix Suns) who had such a productive NBA playoff this past season coming into his own as Steve Nash's backup and former NBAers 6'9" Bostjan Nachbar and 6'11" Uros Slokar. Slovenia, in Group B at the Worlds, suffered a tight 79-72 overtime loss to world champions Spain recently and also host a tournament this weekend with Russia, New Zealand and Serbia

Greece (FIBA #4) hosts of this prestigous tournament will prepare for Group C play at the Worlds with a tough, disciplined group that runs their offense and is highly rated despite not having an NBA player on the roster and most players from their own Greek league.

Tuesday, August 17th CANADA vs. SERBIA; GREECE vs. SLOVENIA

Wednesday, August 18th SERBIA vs. SLOVENIA; GREECE vs. CANADA

Thursday, August 19th SLOVENIA vs. CANADA; GREECE vs. SERBIA
Athens is 7 hours ahead of Eastern time/10 hours ahead of Western time zone.

Official Site on Greece Basketball (Select the last option from the dropdown list for this year's event). It's in Greek, and Google Translator shows a different schedule than the one posted above.

Links for the FIBA team pages for the four teams in the Acropolis tournament:

      • Serbia

      • Greece

The lead story on the Canada team page has a nice pic of our very photogenic Mr. Sacre in the second win over France:

Thanks ZN as usual you have saved me a lot of time. This tournament will give us a better indication as to how well the Canadians are faring. I would hope that the team has brought Kelly along in case Jermaine Anderson recovers from his leg injury. If not it will be a shame as he has shown that he can contribute at this level.

          Thanks, Ozzy!

          A little more info:

Based on my research (a very convoluted path indeed, via a site which shows games in Austria time, which I've conerted to PST), I believe that Canada and Greece will play tomorrow morning at 11:45 AM PDT. Hoping a live stats link pops up between now and then.

          Wednesday: Canada-Serbia, 9:00 AM PDT.

          Thursday: Canada-Slovenia, 9:00 AM PDT

Can't wait to see what happens! I soothe my shaky nerves, though, reminding myself: No matter what happens in these friendlies, Canada looks to have drawn a nice group in the WC preliminaries in Turkey and looks to me to stand good chance defeat a couple of teams and thereby survive the preliminaries.

Yippie! I've blundered across live stats for the Acropolis Tournament! Canada-Greece should start in a little over an hour, about 11:45 PST.

The stat site is the one that was used for the Love Cyprus tournament Elias played in, and the roster for the Canada-Greece game still shows the Germany Roster. That should change before the start of the Canada game.

Other tidbits: There's a thread on Interbasket.net with some information, and I'm hoping some of the posters there who are able to watch the game on local TV will be posting some updates on the game.

Note the results for Greece in the Love Cyprus tourney Elias and the Germans played in:
            GREECE-RUSSIA, 101-63
            GREECE-GERMANY, 82-54

Someone in the interbasket thread linked above says that "Spanoulis and Bourousis won't play against Canada. (Bourousis won't play in any of the Acropolis games)"

            Go Canada!

Thanks ZN. The link you provided is now showing the starting lineups. Olynyk and Sacre are listed (no Rautins or Landry for Canada).

Wonder if Rautins picked up an injury the other night. Great news that KO is on the roster though!

Well, they're getting killed so far, 27-6, but Rob has entered the game and got fouled and made both FT and has a rebound.

I haven't heard anything re an injury. I think/hope its just a matter of giving the bubble guys a chance to play.

Anyway, Canada getting killed. 33-8. 2/17 from the field.

Sacre back on the bench with 2 fouls in 4 minutes.

                        58-20 at the half.

FWIW, during the Team USA camp this morning (just got my 46" HD TV delivered yesterday and can't stop watching anything basketball related!), Fran Fraschilla predicted a Spain-Greece final in the WC in Turkey.

Kelly got to play seveteen and a half minutes. Like everyone else though, he didn't do too much. However, the experience is always good. Way to go Kelly.
