Four Zags Pick Up All-WCC Baseball Honors

Kalmer named First-Team All-WCC; Stem & Rutherford Named Honorable Mention; Stem & DeSchryver Named All-Freshman

SAN MATEO, Calif. – Brian Kalmer led four Gonzaga players picking up All-West Coast Conference honors ahead of the Zags' WCC Tournament opener in Las Vegas, the league announced Tuesday.

Kalmer earned First-Team All-WCC honors in his first season at GU, with Jacob Rutherford and Sam Stem getting an honorable mention nod. Stem joined Nathan DeSchryver on the league's All-Freshman team. The honor is the first of all four players' careers.

Kalmer finished the regular season ranked among the Top 10 in the WCC in 10 different offensive categories, leading the league in RBI (51) and Walks (36) and ranking No. 2 in Slugging (.680), OBP (1.133) and Home Runs (15). He also finished No. 3 in Hits (70), No. 3 in Doubles (15), No. 4 in On-Base % (0.453), No. 6 in Runs scored (44) and No. 6 in Batting Average (.355).

Kalmer's 15 home runs are the most in a single season by a GU player since 2002, and his two grand slams are the most since 2009.

Stem, who has the second-most triples in the league (3) and second-best batting average (.313) on GU's lineup, has driven in 30 runs in 45 starts as a true freshman. He's racked up 17 extra base hits this season, the third-most on the team.

Rutherford, who picked up WCC Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing a complete-game shutout against Saint Mary's on May 7, has thrown a career-high 75.1 innings of work, striking out 72 in the process. He's lasted longer than eight innings three times this season, including two complete games, to finish the regular season with a 4-3 record in 11 starts.

In his first season after redshirting last spring, DeSchryver started eight games on the mound for GU, holding opponents to the lowest batting average on the team (.255) over 58 innings. He's struck out 45 in that span.

The No. 6-seed Bulldogs (18-33, 14-13 WCC) will need to snap a six-game losing streak to stay alive and advance past the opening round of the WCC Tournament in Las Vegas on Wednesday at 3 p.m., when they'll face No. 3-seed Santa Clara (31-18, 17-10).
