Baseball: Evan Wells Named Assistant Coach

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga Baseball has announced Evan Wells as their third assistant coach. Thanks to a new NCAA coaching rule, Wells will add Assistant Coach to his role as Director of Baseball Operations, a position he has served in for two seasons. Prior to operations, Wells worked as the program's Director of Player Development for two seasons.

"Evan has been a great resource for our program, and I'm excited to see him transition into an assistant coach," Machtolf said. "He is a great Zag and will continue to elevate our program in our quest to playing in Omaha."

Before joining Gonzaga's staff in 2019, Wells served as an assistant coach at Longwood University after coaching stints at Dartmouth, Creighton, Washington, and Whitworth. While at Dartmouth, Wells assisted the Big Green to a division championship in three of his five seasons, working primarily with infielders and hitters. Dartmouth led the league in fielding percentage four of Wells' five years as an assistant and finished second in 2016 with a .972 percentage. In 2012, Dartmouth set a school record with 32 wins and posted a .979 fielding percentage.

Wells graduated from Gonzaga in 2009 where he was a three-year starter at second base and batted leadoff. The Olympia native finished his career with a .310 batting average and helped lead the Zags to the 2009 NCAA Regionals. His 152 career runs scored sits seventh all-time in program history and his 107 walks are eighth.

"I can't thank Coach Mac enough for giving me a chance as a player and also as a member of his staff," Wells said. "Even though I've worked at other schools, Gonzaga has been my true home since the fall of 2005, and I don't want to be anywhere else."
