This is probably a one off for me. Listened to a few of their other songs, didn't really grab me, but I really like this one.

Very recently discovered this one. Not everybody can pull off blue hair, but it's definitely working for her.

The music company executives at the end of this video restate DZ’s thesis.

“Rock is dead. I need bling-bling. I need some girls. I need to see booty shaking.”
“No team in the country has a better winning percentage against power conference teams since 2017 than Gonzaga... the Zags are playing above average teams in the best leagues in the country and winning 78% of the time.”

Literally just stumbled onto this, but damn it sounds good to me. Started in 2012, several albums, still active. Singer has a raw and powerful voice, I'm getting some shades of Janis Joplin in there.

I wasn’t much of a Kid Rock fan until he performed a few USO shows for the troops while I was in Iraq. It really helped morale for a few of my unit’s troops. I often wondered if his show pulled one of my soldiers off of the suicide ledge after the kid’s best friend died and his wife dumped him.

I still don’t care for much of his music, but I am grateful to him for doing those shows.

I saw him while deployed, too. He stopped in Kuwait on his way north. He was completely surprised and a little annoyed to find there was a huge camp in Kuwait with a few thousand troops there. He insisted on setting up an impromptu concert that night. Then just went down into the crowd of troops and hung out with us for a while. I was impressed.

And here’s a counterpoint that supports DZ’s original thesis...

I wanna talk about “active rock” again, for just a second. This was not surprising, but it was shocking. So Nielsen, the gargantuan media data company, they measure radio airplay. Here, now, are Nielsen’s Top 10 Mainstream Rock Radio Songs of the 2010s. From 2010 through 2019, the 10 most-played songs on mainstream rock radio are as follows:

                              10. Nirvana, “Lithium”
                              9. Soundgarden, “Black Hole Sun”
                              8. Metallica, “Enter Sandman”
                              7. Nirvana, “In Bloom”
                              6. The Offspring, “Self Esteem”
                              5. Pearl Jam, “Even Flow”
                              4. Stone Temple Pilots, “Plush”
                              3. Nirvana, “Come as You Are”
                              2. Alice in Chains, “Man in the Box”
                              1. Nirvana, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

I do share DZ’s sentiment that newer rock doesn’t get much notice or airplay. I attended law school in the early 2,000s. There were two excellent modern rock stations in that city while I was a student. They played a lot of 90s rock and 90s artists, but they were still rotating in newer music from the early 2,000s.

I spent a couple of afternoons in that city in January. I found one of those stations on the radio. I spent several hours listening to the radio. I would estimate that 70% of their current rotation consists of music that they were playing in 2002. The rest of it leans more heavily on music from 2002-2010 with only a token smattering of music from the past decade.

This station still uses the tagline, “Your new rock alternative.”
