Another look at the study. As is often the case, the results were not a slam dunk. The result was statistically significant, but with some caveats:
“ The difference between the two groups was small: only 20 cases out of over 340,000 individuals over a span of 8 weeks.

I have a hard time going from these numbers to the assured conclusions that “masks work” that was promulgated by the media or the authors after this preprint appeared. This study was not blinded, as it’s impossible to blind a study on masks. The intervention was highly complex and included a mask promotion campaign and education about other mitigation measures including social distancing. Moreover, individuals were only added to the study if they consented to allow the researchers to visit and survey their household. There was a large differential between the control and treatment groups here, with 95% consenting in the treatment group but only 92% consenting in control. This differential alone could wash away the difference in observed cases. Finally, symptomatic seropositivity is a crude measure of covid as the individuals could have been infected before the trial began.

Given the numerous caveats and confounders, the study still only found a tiny effect size. My takeaway is that a complex intervention including an educational program, free masks, encouraged mask wearing, and surveillance in a poor country with low population immunity and no vaccination showed at best modest reduction in infection.”

I looked up a dozen of them... not one article mentions the vaccine as being the cause or even mentioned... but the author of your "article" makes that jump and calls it carnage from the vaccine. I thought Stockton was a little wacky because of his anti-vaxx rhetoric but the belief he shared about hundreds of athletes dropping dead from the vaccine is beyond bonkers. The man is no longer clear on what is real and what isn't. Sad to see.

If he actually said this then yes, he's lost it.

And I do not believe that it's a belief that the rules don't apply to him so much as a political statement. He is saying that those who want to error on the side of safety are wrong.

The disease is constantly changing (given it had such a great chance to get around), masks make it harder to get around, whether it makes a huge difference or not. I am sure that a lot of surgeries could be done with the surgeon not wearing a mask. They wear masks bc it cuts down on risk, that is all, and that's all the university asked for.

It is a private university. If they mandated you had to wear a coat and tie they could and you'd have a choice.

We have had one of our family spend time on a ventilator and probably others that are less known. One would think that we'd be doing everything to keep things as safe as possible.

I've listened to people that volunteered for vaccine trials....encountered adverse reactions and thrown from studies and denied help. They shut down facebook groups which contained 1000's of people banding together looking for solutions.

You have a brand new virus that has had major mutations at least twice, science is about doing the best they can keeping up with something that isn't in stasis (unlike the cellphone). The only thing that has been established unequivocally is the vaccines give people the greatest chance of better outcomes. Anyone disagreeing is using Facebook research.

We had an absolute specialist in this exact type of medicine, someone on the front lines who has studied this stuff for decades, told he doesn't know what he's talking about by people who read stuff they don't understand and come to the conclusion they already knew they'd concluded before they looked.

Someone like John Stockton saying what he did above is just proof that one can find the answer one is looking for. If I have a heart attack, I go immediately to a cardiologist for a catheter, if I have cancer, I'd go immediately to MD Anderson, something terribly psychiatric - the best one can find, this is no different in my mind. It is just new and refuses to stay the same, continuing to mutate and the mutations act differently, which causes recommendations to change. It doesn't mean they were ever "wrong" or give license to people who think they know better.

We ran off the guy that could have given us the newest, latest, research.

I got vaxxed the 3rd day available for me, followed up first day 2 weeks later. I got nailed by Delta ( A mutation that the vaccine was not designed to deal with) and I got so sick, but at no point did I cough or get short of breath. I then got the booster. So I'm vaxxed, boosted, and natural, and still wear a mask bc a mask does more to protect others than me. It's just not that complicated, it's the politics that makes it complex.
